"Do you like ramen noodle?" The young
Japanese woman wearing a white nurses' uniform asked me? "Sure, I
love ramen." I answered. "Please wait" she said before hurrying
down the street towards an idling ramen noodle truck; a small entourage
of cameramen, musicians and unusual looking people following close
behind her. "What's going on?" I asked Yumiko. Yumiko
explained that our neighborhood had been chosen by a local TV station as
a test location for a new brand of instant ramen noodles (presumably the
noodle maker is a sponsor for the station). Yumiko further
explained that the woman in the nurses' uniform is a local TV celebrity,
and that the film crew was recording people's impressions of the new
ramen. The ramen truck down the street was dishing out free bowls
of ramen to any and all takers. The only catch was that those who
accepted a bowl of ramen had to submit to an interview by the noodle
nurse which may be aired on local TV. The Bell family was pretty
hungry at the time so we agreed to share a bowl of the new noodles.
The noodles were good, the interview was interesting and there is a good
chance that we may be on local TV on Christmas eve. We plan to
check the TV listings and will record the event when it airs.
