"Natsu Matsuri" is the term the Japanese use to describe the summer festival which is held in cities, towns and villages throughout the country during July and August.  The festival is a celebration of the delights of summer and includes singing, dancing and traditional taiko drumming.

The event is usually held at the community Shinto (Japanese native religion) shrine.  Musicians, singers, dancers and drummers perform on a large central stage around which community members (particularly children) dance.  Surrounding this central stage are various vendors selling traditional Japanese treats such as grilled squid sticks (think squid popsicle), octopus pancake balls, and various sweets and snacks.  Great beer too!  My first Natsu Matsuri was almost 20 years ago and I still remember it vividly as one of my most enjoyable and exciting experiences of summertime in Japan.  Check out the photos below for a glimpse of the fun had during this year's Natsu Matsuri.
